What is the
Alexander Technique?
In everyday life, at work, and in art, we do many things unconsciously. Habitual postures and movement patterns can lead to pain or unsatisfactory results. Paradoxically, we often get in our own way when we want to do something exceptionally well: Unnecessary tension and a narrowing of our perception then prevent us from achieving our goals.
In these moments, our bodies experience something like a tiny startle response. Everyone knows it from their own experience: the breath is held, the shoulders are raised, the head moves forward. Body and mind are equally involved. The Alexander Technique aims to resolve this reaction—in both body and mind.
Students learn to perceive this pattern and, through conscious pausing and targeted body alignment, develop a calm inner and outer posture – and maintain this during everyday movements and positions. Through conscious less doing, a new form of control emerges: trusting in the self-organizing powers of our organism in everything we learn and do.
